Hey all, checking in a bit early here but I'm about to head out to the practice field for the first day of veteran minicamp. As such, we might be getting this going a little later on today. Thanks for your patience.
  • Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

All right, off the practice field and ready to go. Will have to keep this one quick today though so I can get stories written about today's minicamp before tonight's schedule release.

Nick, do you think like I do, that we should draft a good DT in our first two rounds?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

It's a very deep draft at DT, I would think there could be some really good value sitting there in round 2 and probably even into round 3.
  • Dragan, Split,Croatia

    1:51 PM CT

Hi Nick. I was wondering if you think Rams will trade down if they don't find the guy they like at 6 ?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I think it's possible but you have to have a trade partner, too. Not sure anyone is going to want to pay the freight to move up.

What kind of shape is Albert Haynesworth in? it's been quiet on him lately but I assume after the draft we reach out to Big Al correct?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I have no idea what kind of shape he's in. I don't think it's a sure thing the Rams reach out to him after the draft. I said if they did, that's when they'd do it. They just added Laws as well and if they get someone in the draft, I'm not sure that will be as much of a possibility.

Hey Nick, How much trade activity would you expect to see the evening between round #1 and round #2 for our first pick of day two. One would think it could be a long night manning the phones.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I don't know, I suppose it depends on who is there. Everyone always expects that but it rarely comes to fruition. I think the Rams will get some calls but what if there's a player they really like sitting there? It's entirely possible someone the Rams have rated as a mid first rounder could be there considering the differences on team draft boards across the league.
  • ERIK, VIRGINIA BEACH, VA

    1:54 PM CT

How about getting RB Ryan Grant after the draft. He would be a great back up and could be cheap. Also whats the deal with QB Dixon and WR Simpson are we waiting til after the draft to sign these two. Dixon would be a great change of pace QB and Simpson (I know he has issues) has the most up side of the remaining WR's. Thanks, ERIK
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

If the Rams don't find a premiere backup in the draft, perhaps they could make a call on Grant. I think they'd prefer a younger player, though for that role. Simpson is making up his mind, he could potentially decide pre-draft. Not sure where things stand with Dixon, could depend on finding a backup that shakes loose from a team drafting a QB.
  • Robert, Highlands Ranch, CO

    1:56 PM CT

Hey Nick, Regardless of whether or not we get Blackmon with #6, who is the next receiver you would like to see us take? I do think we will need to grab at least 2 in this draft.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I personally like Rueben Randle the best after Blackmon but Floyd would fall into that category as well. I'm also partial to Brian Quick and Chris Givens.
  • Rich, South Dakota

    1:58 PM CT

Do you think it's possible the Rams would trade up to get Richardson?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    No.
  • Robert, Highlands Ranch, CO

    1:58 PM CT

Hey Nick, I am in full agreement on the need for playmakers, and hence, believe we should stand pat in the draft and grab one of the elite 6. Having said this, what do you think the odds are that another teams trades in front of us for one of them? There is a lot of talk about someone trading up for Tannehill (don't know why), but what about trading up for one of the six?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I suppose it could happen but I don't think it will happen. The thing is, for any team in the top 6 to move out of that top six, they'd want a lot in return. I'm not seeing that as probable though it's not impossible.
  • Ken, Anaheim

    1:59 PM CT

Nick, Who's going to be the starting Linebackers for the Rams?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

On the practice field today, it was Laurinaitis in the middle, Dunbar on the weak side and Hull on the strong side. But I fully expect the Rams to get at least one linebacker in the draft.
  • Steve, NJ

    2:00 PM CT

I hope the Rams move up in the draft to get Blockman or Richardson. I heard they were thinking about it, hopefully its just some misinformation that goes around. What do you think?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I'd be stunned, absolutely stunned, if the Rams moved UP in the draft.
  • Will, Tallahassee

    2:01 PM CT

With all the attention on the first round pick, what are the chances of the Rams trying to move into the first round by using their second round picks?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Possible but not probable. More likely, if the Rams wanted badly enough to move back into the first, they'd do it with a team with a late first round pick and use their third rounder to do it, not both 2s.
  • Cam, CA

    2:02 PM CT

Hey Nick, all this SJAX might be cut or traded stuff is just people trying to create a story out of nothing right? I thought the objective was to surround Bradford with weapons?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Yes. It was pure speculation. What purpose would it serve to get rid of him right now? To free up cap space? By that time, there's no even any players to really use that space on. I suppose if Richardson was drafted and the Rams got a good trade offer they'd maybe consider it but I just don't see it. And to make myself clear again, I don't think there's any chance that Trent Richardson falls to No. 6 in the draft. Aside from Luck and Griffin going 1 and 2, there's nothing I feel more comfortable about saying than that.
  • Joe , Atlantic City

    2:04 PM CT

Hey Nick, It has been quite some time since the Rams have had a good kick returner on special teams. I know that is a rare talent to acquire, but what about Jeff Fischer's philosophy--do you think he may be interested in looking in that direction? Thanks Nick!!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

It's possible and I think maybe finding a RB who could also handle those duties would be a good idea but remember that kick returners don't have as much value these days since there are so many touchbacks.
  • Ryan Williams, Youngstown. Oh

    2:04 PM CT

On the practice field who were both safeties and corners
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Gordy and Finnegan at CB, Dahl and Mikell at safety. Stewart was the only player not in attendance. He was taking an exam as he works toward his degree.
  • ram for life, fort lauderdale

    2:08 PM CT

nick its almost that time, i really think that the number 6 pick will be the prime pick for a contender trying to get tannerhill if he's available here or trent to be that final big piece to a playoff contender (atlanta last year with julio). if fisher stays close to his drafting habits of past years i think cox would be his guy and if so would trading with lets say miami at 8 getting another second and maybe a forth rounder and still getting our guy be in play? with another 2nd we can get a fleener and randle or hill
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Why would Miami trade up for Tannehill? Why would anyone trade to the Rams' spot for Tannehill? The Jags aren't taking him at 7, so you'd only need to move there to get him. I'm sorry, I just don't forsee a trade for the Rams materializing. And frankly, they'd be better off getting one of the elite six players.
  • Brian, Ithaca, NY

    2:10 PM CT

Nick, I agree we should not trade up for Richardson even though he probably is the best player in the hole draft, their are other very good running backs we can pick up in round 2 -4, Blackman has been the guy from the get go, but the kid from notre dame is starting to grow on me, Do you think the rams are higher on Blackman than Floyd?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Blackmon.
  • Ken, Anaheim

    2:10 PM CT

Nick, How did the pair of corners Gordy and Finnegan look, I know it's the first day but, for the start of the season.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

They were fine but not much to gather from these things, they are just getting used to running around out there again.
  • Philip, Denmark

    2:11 PM CT

Hi Nick. Which big name could you see falling out of round 1 for us to take? Is it a possibility for Dontario Poe?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I could see Poe falling out of round one but not likely. I think Quinton Coples is another candidate for that. I'm not sure that would make either a slam dunk for the Rams, though.
  • Joe, Atlantic City

    2:11 PM CT

Hey Nick, Since there seems to be some depth in this year's draft in the way of wide receivers, what do you think about going after a faster and quicker wide out who gets good separation--like a Lesean Jackson? All of the data on Blackmon is that he is a yards after catch type receiver. Thanks Again Nick!!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

What about both? What about a guy like Blackmon in round one and a guy like Chris Givens (a speedster) in round three?
  • Will, Tallahassee

    2:12 PM CT

You've been close to batting 1.000 with your insight as of late. Any other surprise possible signings or tidbits that you want to share with us?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Nothing on the radar right now. Knee deep in draft stuff at this point and so is the staff.
  • Will, Tallahassee

    2:12 PM CT

If YOU had to keep two out of DX, Gibson, Curry, Pettis, and Salas, who would it be?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Can I see them go through OTAs and minicamps first? Salas would be one for sure.
  • Philip, Denmark

    2:13 PM CT

Hi Nick. What are your thoughts on J. Jenkins if he's there in the second round? Does the character concern you?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I think he'd be a great pick. The character issues have to be a concern but his talent is high level and he could be an absolute steal. There's inherent risk there, but isn't it time to take a risk or two?
  • Philip, Denmark

    2:13 PM CT

Hi Nick. How would you feel about Fletcher Cox in the draft? I'm warming up to the idea but on the side I can't justify not picking one of elite talents (including Blackmon)
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I like Cox a lot, I think he's the best DT on the board. But not more than any of the top six guys.
  • Ryan Williams, Youngstown, Ohio

    2:14 PM CT

With the free agency pratically drying up I am not too worried about the rams and their WR free agency addition I see us being much better. With lots of Wr expected to be waived on different teams we can make tons of addition so sit tight. So what do you think about a draft like this were at number 6 if claiborne, blackmon and richardson are gone we take kahilil, 33 we take Randle and 39 Alameda Ta'amu third round -Bruce Irvin, OLB
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Wouldn't be bad though I think Irvin is more of a fit in a 3-4.
  • Brian, Ithaca, NY

    2:14 PM CT

Nick Was Jerome Murphy able to practice?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Yes. And I spoke with him afterward. He's in good spirits and excited to be back. He chopped off the dreads, too! I'll have a story about him coming up sometime soon so stay tuned for that.
  • Russ , in Phoenix

    2:15 PM CT

Hey Nick Chris Givens - What is it that you see in his abilties? Am I correct that he is one of the better route runners in this year's draft? Thanks
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Good route runner, game breaking speed. He has some character concerns but he's the type of deep threat that could be really valuable. Personally, I like him better than Torrey Smith from last year. That's just me, though.
  • Nick, St. Louis

    2:15 PM CT

Hey Nick! Second question for you. Of all the draft analysts out there, whose opinion do you value most? For me, Mike Mayock is the best. I'm not a fan of the ESPN guys at all.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I co sign on Mike Mayock. And may I suggest someone who flies under the radar? Chad Reuter, who used to be at NFL Draft Scout and is now the head of draft research for NFL Network is really good. He's young but he's a fountain of information. I hope you guys have enjoyed reading his takes in my draft previews.
  • Nick, St. Louis

    2:16 PM CT

Hey Nick! Do you think there's a chance that the team makes it out of this draft WITHOUT a wide receiver? Or at the very least not one drafted higher than the 5th round? I'm not at all condoning it, but its a question worth asking seeing as everyone seems to think one of our first three picks is guaranteed to be at that position if not two of them.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

No chance. They'll take one somewhere. I think there's a better chance they come out with two than with none.
  • Mike, Canada

    2:17 PM CT

Hey Nick, Forgive me for this question if it is not informed. But it would seem that playing guard on the offensive line might make more sense for Jason Smith. He is a big , strong dude who excels in the run game as compared to the pass game. He has trouble with fast DEs It seems like his confidence is shot. Does it make sense to move him to guard? Is it a little easier and would utilize his strnghts and maybe get his confidence back ? Are the skill sets that different?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I spoke with Jason Smith today. He is really excited to be back and had some interesting things to say about his return and how grateful he is to get another shot. I'll have a longer story about him tomorrow but just know that he believes he can still be a top notch tackle in this league and he's making some changes to help get there.
  • Scott, Los Angeles

    2:19 PM CT

Hi Nick, good morning. Hope all is well. As a long time Ram fan I was saddened to hear about Rich Saul passing away after his battle with leukemia. Ironically, I volunteered to be part of an event led by the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society via Team in Training. The event I signed up for is a hike at the Grand Canyon next month. For the past 10 weeks I have been in training for this event and raising money via donations from friends and family. Many that have donated have done it on behalf of a loved one they lost. I will be making my own pledge in memory of a truly great person, both on and off the field and hiking in his memory.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

That's really terrific Scott. Would you like to share a link or something of a place people can send donations?
  • Josh, Iowa

    2:20 PM CT

Hey Nick, with his off the field problems, is FA WR Jerome Simpson still on the Rams' radar? I heard he got 15 days in jail, but what do you think his punishment from the league will be?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

He is still on the radar. He has interest from some other teams. He's weighing his options, I'm told.
  • Chip, Charlotte

    2:20 PM CT

Would you qualify Blackmon as a "safer" pick than Floyd or has he showed better on tape consistantly ? Is this still considered an elite 6 draft ? Thank you for the chats.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Both. He's better on tape which makes him safer. Yes, this is still an elite 6 draft. All the talk this time of year about guys "flying up draft boards" is silly. It means nothing. If a player had better tape in January, guess what? His tape is still better now. And the tape is a big chunk of the evaluation.
  • Philip, Denmark

    2:21 PM CT

Nick all this talk about drafting a punter is that really a possibility? It's at the bottom of the list of needs in my world. Couldn't one easily be gotten as an UDFA?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

It's a really good year for punters. If there's one you want in the seventh round, why not take him to ensure you get him?
  • Kevin, Redding Ca.

    2:22 PM CT

Hi Nick, How much cap space do we have? Will we have enough to keep Amendola? Thanks!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Amendola will be a Ram. In fact, the deadline is Friday for another team to make a run at him or any restrcited free agent. It's not going to happen. People need to stop worrying about it.
  • Josh, Iowa

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I think he likes them but I'm not sure, haven't seen him yet. Will talk to him tomorrow.
  • Joe, Atlantic City

    2:23 PM CT

Sorry Nick--don't mean to be greedy. Who do you think is the best DT the Rams have a legitimate shot at getting in the draft. Last post--I promise. THANKS!!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Hmmm, could be some good options in round two. That group might include Jerel Worthy, Kendall Reyes, Alamdea Ta'amu and Brandon Thompson among others. I like Thompson for what the Rams need though Worthy is probably the best of that group. Don't sleep on Mike Martin or Derek Wolfe as a possible round three guy, either.
  • fred , boise

    2:24 PM CT

hello Nick! what was the feeling like at the minicamp, compared to the last regimes minicamp openers? i'm sure it was upbeat, how did the veterans respond to Fisher? are the players allowed to have contact? thanks!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Definitely upbeat, players are happy to be back. And yes, this is the first contact they've been able to have with the staff on the field.
  • Pam , Boise

    2:25 PM CT

Hey Nick! If the Rams take one of the top six prospects, and with all the defensive tackles on the team now, do we draft a tackle later at 33 or 39? Also what position is Alexander on the present roster #1, #2, or #3 receiver? What have you heard about his health? Thanks GO RAMS!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I think a DT could certainly be in the mix at 33 or 39 but also maybe even in the third round. Alexander doesn't have a "roster" position right now. He's in the mix of guys getting reps but there is no depth chart right now.

    2:27 PM CT

On the player Vontaze Burfict. He was the number one rated inside Linebacker going into the season. Yet, Mike Mayock stated two weeks ago on "path to the draft"..."he could not find any good tape on Vontaze Burfict". Is Vontaze Burfict this year's draft pariah ? He has not issues off the field. Its only been his on the field troubles. He had outstanding game against USC causing Monte Kiffin to say "He's Unbelievable. He's big, fast, strong. He's great, hes' going to be a player on Sundays, there isn't any doubt about it. Ok, he had a week combine and he always seems to say the wrong thing. But, at this point he's being panned for everything he says and does. I just don't see how a guy who was rated so high can drop out of sight and have Mike Mayock state "he has not seen any good tape on him". I just think the Vontaze Burfict situation has unfairly spiraled out of control. And its unfortunate. Do you see him being drafted in the first five rounds at this point ? He was a consensus first round pick in pre-season mocks and isn't it possible that he's being blamed for a bad situation at ASU ?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I think someone (I'm looking at you, Cincinnati) could take a shot on him in the first five rounds. But here's the thing, his situation is a result of his own actions. The worst thing you can be called is a coach killer and I've heard that term about him numerous times. You can't just go out on the field and freestyle.
  • Mike, Ca

    2:28 PM CT

Hey Nick, I've read a couple of mock drafts that said if the Rams were to get Trent Richardson that they would cut Steven Jackson (which is absurd in my opinion) to save the $7 million he counts against the salary cap. Haven't we already passed the point where his salary counts against our cap this year?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

No. But again, I ask, what would that cap savings do for you this year? You certainly wouldn't be able to use it on a better player than Jackson. I just think it's idle speculation.

Hi Nick, Well it's almost here, The Draft! and do you know what, I have buyers regret already. I really like Blackmon but the more I read the more worried I am that he may not be all that. And to be honest, I think it might be safer to draft a OT or DT instead. I also like Richardson too but our needs are so many and we need help everywhere. I would like to draft RB James in the third if he still there, however I think we need help on the lines first. Am I being silly and over evaluating the draft. Thanks

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Here's the thing: people get too caught up in whether a guy is "worth" a certain pick or if he's a good "value" on where he's picked. Let me put it like this: If Justin Blackmon turns out to be the next Anquan Boldin instead of the next Larry Fitzgerald, isn't that good enough? I'd argue that you'd take that in a heartbeat.
  • Don Riley , New Jersey

Have to pick a bone with Chad Reuter's statement. "Matt Kalil is a slam dunk if he slips to the Rams". I don't see him as a slam dunk. I don't feel anybody truly knows if he can come into camp and beat out Saffold. If there is any chance that Saffold could beat him out. Why would the Rams spend the sixth pick in the entire draft on a right tackle. When they are so needy in so many areas. You also have to consider that Jason Smith is still an entity. And no one knows if Jason Smith can play guard. So, to state they will move Jason Smith to guard is a total hyposthetical at this point. What do you think ?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I'd be inclined to agree with your general thesis but I do think if Kalil slipped to 6, you'd have to strongly consider it.

    2:33 PM CT

Hey Nick, Just a comment on your "experts" about LaMichael James. True that a lot of Oregon's runs are around end, but that was mainly due to the fact they played teams with very stout defensive lines that could over power their linemen straight up. But LaMichael James can run between the tackles quite nicely if the blocking can do its job, so the used their lateral speed to beat the opposing defense. Also LaMichael James is a fine receiver, he played with a QB, Darron Thomas, who has accuracy issues. There have been only a few instances in which James ran without the ball in the passing game and since he wasn't a constant in the passing game those few are amplified. I think the experts needed to do a little more research on the Oregon product before laying down those opinions. I don't know how fast Sproles is, but I do know LaMichael James is not too slow.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Fair enough. Everybody sees players different. I'd say your evaluation is probably more close to how the Rams see him. Even if he's not the next Darren Sproles, if he's a poor man's version, he could certainly help.

Since it is stated that the rams have so much holes all over the place and coach Fisher said that he do not see them passing up on any position do you see us drafting a TE like Fleener if he makes it to the second round?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    2:36 PM CT

Sorry for the follow up but I attended the pre-draft party last night. I don't know if you were there, but it seems to me the Rams are a fan of Brockers from LSU. This guy scares me. He only had one year of experience of playing and doesn't seem very good at rushing the passer. We desperately need playmakers. Can you explain. Thanks.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

You have to have options in case you trade down. Brockers is very highly regarded around the league despite what some of the combine lovers might tell you. He's a bit of a projection but in terms of potential, he's got as much as just about anyone in thedraft.

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I'm not sure of specific interest in David, though he wasn't a pre draft visitor. I'll say this, taking an OLB that high in the draft for a team with the Rams' needs is probably a little too rich.
  • fred , boise

    2:38 PM CT

hello Nick thanks for answering. i'm for staying at #6 (prefer Blackmon or Richardson) and taking any of the top six prospects. some mocks are saying that the Rams take Fletcher Cox and passing on Blackmon why would the team pass on Blackmon, i know that there are alot of recievers in the draft but aren't there alot of DL that the team could take at 33 or 39? thanks!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

If they believed Cox was the better player, they'd take him. I have heard nothing to believe that is the case but I guess I can't unequivocally say it's impossible.

  • Roger Koopman, Bozeman, Montana

    2:41 PM CT

Here's my "two cents" (feel free to disagree.) In the unlikely event Richardson is still available at #6, I think the Rams should be all over him like ugly on an ape. It's clear, with the four first-rounders we've reserved over the next two drafts, that we recognize (wisely) the future isn't now, it's at least a couple of years from now. (Not to say things won't be interesting in the meantime!) Richardson is the franchise player of the future. We can find other Blackmons. Our passing game will be much improved this year, if for no other reason than better protection and the return of Amendola. A Blackmon pick wouldn't disappoint me -- unless Richardson was still on the board, in which case you'd hear my tooth-gnashing from 2,000 miles away!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I don't disagree, Roger. I think Richardson is the best non QB in the draft and a superstar in the making.

Hey Nick Have the Rams brought Stephen Hill in for a look? I looked at this guy at his pro day and I have never seen a guy so fast, not just in a straight line either, his patterns just blew by guys and his hands looked good too. I think he will slip into the second round because of his lack of catches at the college level. If we miss on Blackmon he could be a real playmaker like Mike Wallace. What do you think?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

He has not been brought in on a visit. That doesn't mean the Rams have no interest, it just means he hasn't visited. I'm leery of Hill because he's a measurables guy but he did make plays when given the chance. My concern is whether he can run the NFL route tree.

Hey Nick, Need your expert opinion: M Holliday in for a down season, or just a slow start? Gotta love being able to stick with St Louis from football season through baseball season. Time for the Rams to bring home some championships like the Cardinals and I'l be giddy as a school girl!
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

My expert opinion is saved for football and knowledge on the Mighty Ducks movies (OK, that's half true, I'll let you decide which half). But I do think Holliday will be fine. He's been hitting the ball hard but just hasn't had luck with them falling in for hits.

Hey Nick, Everyone needs to get away from the lousy rumor mill that has us cutting or trading SJ39 if we were to draft Richardson. Yes Richardson is talented enough to start, but I think with the ability to learn how to be a pro from the most professional guy on our team (because he could've been an "all about me" player and left town in search for the ring). SJ39 is here to stay and will help develop Richardson into a top-notch player and very respectful professional. That's if we drafted him, but that would be the case with any RB we bring in via the draft. So no need to worry about SJ39 going anywhere. Just wanted to put that out there.

Did you get a look at the players coming in for veteran camp. Did anyone looks bigger or better in any way? Also it seems as though the talk is blackmon is the 6th best player in the draft. I guess the rams won either way by drafting the best player and greatest need or will get a steal if they land the cb,ot or rb.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I did see some. Jason Smith looks really good, just more chiseled and seems to really be motivated. I think you'll like what he had to say when I write about him tomorrow. And you're right: if the Rams draft one of those top four remaining guys, they'll either get the best WR, RB, CB or OT in the draft. That's not a bad thing, is it?
  • White Buffalo, Ripon, CA

    2:49 PM CT

Hu Nick what are your thoughts on the Rams trading up to number four to get Blackmon. My thinking is the Rams stay put if Blackmon is at number 6 take him. If not take one of the top six how do you feel about that. Thanks

I think the Rams need to address the OLB position heavily in the draft, since there doesn't seem to be much available in FA. I really like L. David from NEB, and I've seen several "experts" show him as a first round pick. If he falls to the Rams in the second do you think it would be a mistake to pass him up or do you think there is enough talent to find OLB help deeper down the board?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I don't think I'd draft an OLB before the third round unless I really thought he was special. Bottom line, OLBs simply don't play enough in today's NFL to be taken that high unless they are major difference makers, especially 4-3 OLBs.
  • White Buffalo, Ripon, CA

  • Mike, Ca

    2:51 PM CT

The popular pick is obviously getting a superstar playmaker like Blackmon or Richardson, but people should not rule out us picking up a DT in the first round. With Long and Quinn, and some of our FA moves we've quietly been building a solid defensive front. While it wouldn't be a "sexy" move by any means, I can still see it happening. Games are won in the trenches after all.

You make a very solid point, Mike.
  • Randy Smith, Eugene, OR

    2:52 PM CT

Nick, The only way I see SJ39 leaving is if we were able to draft Richardson and SJ39 suddenly has a change of heart and tells the team he's no longer interested in being here and demand a trade or release in which then they would need to draft another RB at some point in this draft, unless he had the change of heart after the draft and I just don't see that happening. He seems very determined that he will be part of our eventual turn around.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

I think Steven has reached a point in his career where he'd be OK with the Rams drafting someone so long as that person is respectful and willing to learn. I think for the purpose of winning games, SJ would probably prefer help at positions other than his own but if the organization believed a RB was the best guy for the long term success of the franchise, I think he'd be on board and I think he'd be happy to show Richardson the ropes. Just my opinion based on where Jack is at this point in his career and how much he's matured in the past eight years.

Blackmon is not worth it. cause you CAN wait until for #6 he will be there and if not you get Claiborne#6 Randle or Quick or JEFFERYS #33 and DT # 39 and OLB in the third or fourth J. Adams or A.J. Hey Nick, Quick scenario for the Draft, while its not probable I just want to see what you would think if we took Blackmon at 6, Janoris Jenkins at 33 (hoping his character issues push a first round talent down to the second round) and Doug Martin at 39. That would put the drafts best receiver second best corner and second best RB in a Rams jersey. I know that you would rather see James taken at RB but Martin has a great combination of speed, power, can catch the ball and contribute on kick returns, not to mention we don't need a change of pace back we need someone who can eventually replace SJax and who can carry the ball a couple times a game while SJax takes a quick hit of oxygen before going back in to tear it up.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Nick, I thought Cotchery would have been a nice addition. Why is it so difficult for us to sign a wideout?. Getting one before the draft would give us more flexiblity to select better prospects and not be so restricted by need. We are entering this draft in a desperate posture. We absolutely must find an impact WR. I think we are compelled to get Blackmon or Floyd, regardless of how things unfold. One of them is a must. Do you agree?

Hey Nick, Quick question, what is Fisher's track record with guys that seem to have character issues? I thought he did pretty well with Albert Haynesworth, but outside him and Vince Young I dont know how he handled character issue players. I think he would be able to get the best out of Janoris Jenkins myself.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Well, he did very well with Haynesworth and he did pretty well with Young too though I'm not sure he had many character issues. The best case study might be Pac Man Jones, whom it seemed like played pretty well but was never fully committed to the program. Thing is, though, you can't lump all these guys in together. They all have their own personalities and their own maturity issues to handle. I personally think Jenkins is worth the risk but I am not privy to all of the information that the scouting department is, either.

Nick: Tannehill is the wild card here. If he doesn't go before us, then we take the best prospect of the "elite 6". I better not see Fletcher Cox taken over trent Richardson for example. But what if Tannehill gets drafted in the Top 5? Now, two of the top 6 so-called studs would be available at No. 6. Think of some decisions that might have to be made. Kalil or Blackmon? Richardson or Blackmon? Claiborne or Blackmon? Kalil or Claiborne? That's where it would get interesting.
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

congrats on St-louis taking the 2-1 series lead over the sharks, the team looks good, I had my doubts considering how young the team is, but they are playing great. My football question now, are you conserned that a lot of people are now predicting Blackmon to be a potential bust? Also what makes them think that?
    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

    Nick's Mailbag, Stlouisrams.com

Blues should be up 3-0 but they are playing well, happy to see Elliott shine though the circumstances to get his shot weren't ideal. Who is saying Blackmon will be a bust? I haven't heard that anywhere. I'm not concerned about it at all. He's the best receiver in the draft. You know what's changed since January when everybody was singing his praises? Nothing. Not a single thing. If he doesn't pan out, that's the way it goes but if the Rams take him or the Browns take him or whoever takes him and he doesn't become a superstar, that doesn't mean it was wrong to take him in the first place.

I hate to sound negative, but I have funny feeling that Blackmon will be gone before our pick. If he is there at #5 when the Bucs pick, I think one of the teams after the Rams are going to trade up with the Bucs like the Atlanta Falcons/Julio Jones type of deal and get Blackmon before the Rams get him. Too many teams know the Rams need receivers.

I suppose but I've had everybody telling me today that Blackmon isn't that good so why would a team trade up for him? On a serious note, think of it like this: let's assume Cleveland takes Richardson, well Tampa could trade down but then it misses out on the elite CB in the draft, Claiborne. Is it worth it for them to miss out on him so they can trade down and let someone take Blackmon? Remember, if you believe this is a six player draft then wouldn't it stand to reason that any team in the top six will require quite a haul to move back?

Nick, Have you looked at Brain Quick? When I look at the draft review from Mayock, he seems like a perfect guy to draft in round 2. Your thoughts?

I'm a fan of Quick, liked him at the Senior Bowl. A good player who wont't last past round 2.

From what I've seen from your posts/opinions, your dream draft would be something like: 1. Richardson RB 2. Randall WR 2A. Givens WR 3. David OLB . Correct?

I don't know if that would be my dream draft but that would be a really good one. I'd say maybe something more similar to 1. WR Blackmon 2. CB Jenkins 2A. DT Thompson 3. WR Givens Maybe something like that.

Nick, what round do think the Rams might take a gaurd ?

As early as round 2 but probably no later than round 4.

That'll do it for me today. Thanks for all the great questions. We'll do it again next week with a super mega blowout pre-draft chat. OK, so it'll probably just be a normal, regular sized pre-draft chat but it's the last one before the draft, either way!
