Playbook with Brian Billick
5:30 PM - 6:00 PM ETBrian Billick
Former NFL head coach and current NFL Network analyst Brian Billick chatted live on Tuesday, November 10, taking questions on Larry Johnson, the matchup between the Bengals and Steelers, and more.
Brian joins Mike Mayock and host Solomon Wilcots on Playbook every Tuesday and Wednesday, breaking down the previous week's action. Playbook airs four days a week (Tuesday through Friday) on NFL Network at 6 p.m. ET.
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkHey everyone, lets' get started.
5:29 PM ETHey Coach, do you think Larry Johnson signed his career termination papers or do you see him heading to a different team? What do you as a coach see as the risks and rewards of picking up a player with his amount of extensive off the field issues?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkI would be very concerned by adding someone like Larry Johnson to my team, although if his contract were such that he was still having to play to that contract, you might get an initial year of productivity. But the young man must play football.
Shea, Ottawa, Canada
5:31 PM ETHey Brian, you used to play Cincy & Pitt. twice a year with the Ravens. How do you see this huge divisional game going on Sunday? Short week for the Steelers & a hard fough game vs. the Ravens this past Sunday for the Bengals... Always a fan B.B!
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkI think this is one of the best matchups. The Bengals have proven to be a balanced team and Pittsburgh is really beginning to play to their championship form. I would still be willing to bet that as many as three teams come out of the AFC North for the playoffs.
Terrance, San Francisco, CA
5:33 PM ETSalutations Coach Billick, First of all, I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time out and I love watching you and Mike Mayock break down film on Playbook. I would like to get your assessment of Josh Freeman's debut against the Green Bay Packers and how you think he'll fare on the road against the Miami Dolphins. His performance was quite encouraging for Bucs fans such as myself.
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkFor his first outing I thought it was a solid peformance. Certainly an interception for a TD, and 80-yard return and a blocked punt for a score helped Tampa's cause. I think Tampa is smart to get him in early and see what they have at this point.
5:34 PM ETDo you think Tom Brady will have his way with the colts rookies corners this week end?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkTom Brady and the combination of Randy Moss and Wes Welker and Ben Watson will certainly test the young Colts defense.
Daniel, Belen, N.M
5:35 PM ETBrian, What is your thoughts on the bronco's, They start out on fire and now kinda burning out. Is it because teams have figured them out?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThe Broncos have played two very good teams the last two weeks. I thnk they are still one of the better teams in the league. They are having difficulty now generating big plays down the field. Teams are finding they can defend the Broncos receivers. It's Orton's responsibility to get it down the field.
Josh Mickle, Memphis, Tennessee
5:37 PM ETWith Vince Young gainning more convidence from his teamates and coaches that he is the guy, will the next 2 games (including the Monday Night Game against the Texans) judge weather VY is the QB of the Future of the Titan Franchise?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkCertainly Tennessee is going to learn a great deal about it's young QB and about the style of play that they must adopt if he is going to be there QB of the future. I don't know if we're going to have the answer about Young in just the next two weeks.
Stephen , Miami
5:38 PM ETAs a coach how do you deal with a player like Ginn with the case of the drops? Do you think this can be Fixed and what would you do?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkI don't know that Ginn has the drops as much as he's just limited as a down the field receiver. I think the Dolphins may have to recognize that their receiver is just a mid-level player.
Kevin , Staten Island
5:39 PM ETWhat do you think are the issues facing the New York Giants? Against the saints, if it werent for their game winning drive, we would have held them to 146 total yards! Eli was on point the entire day, and was neraly flawless. I know we are on a losing streak into the bye, but what is all the panic really about? We played well, in my opinion. Do you think we could win 6 of our next 7?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkWell, the Giants have played a much different schedule the last three weeks than the one they started the season with. I think we may be beginning to find, with the giants' secondary and receiving corps, that they are just a solid team and not a playoff team.
Tarik, Auckland, New Zealand
5:41 PM ETCoach Billick, what's wrong with the Chicago Bears? After seeing them struggle for the past 4 weeks, I am convinced that it has been poor drafting and poor coaching that has lead to these poor performances? As a coach, what are some crucial mistakes that you are seeing out of the Bears?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThat pretty much covers it. I think the bears' inability to run the ball and their injuries on defense have been hard to overcome. I think the offensive line is the source of the difficulties. I'm not sure Orlando Pace can still play at this level and they've been unable to find the right balance between Cutler and how to use Matt Forte.
Gabriel, Denver City, TX
5:43 PM ETWhat would you fix for the 49ers who are struggling right now, but not out? Will Crabtree score his first td thursday night?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThe 49ers are a hard team to figure out. I think they've been playing, tough, physical defense, they've stayed committed to the run and are getting improved play at the QB position. I just don't know if they've been able to truly carve out their personality, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Joel, Mantua, Ohio
5:45 PM ETwhat do you think the cleveland browns should do to regain some stability in the franchise. and what do you think of mike holmgren as a possible canditate for GM?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkI think first and foremost Browns ownership must decide on the leadership style it wants to adopt. Put people in position to run the organization, then give them an adequate amount of time to implement their basic structure for the organization. Obviously there's no confidence in the current structure.
5:47 PM ETHow do you think the league will respond to the melee in Atlanta? I don't think Coach Smith did anything wrong
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThe league will go over the sideline fight in the washington-atlanta game with a fine tooth comb. You can be certain that both parties that instigated the melee will be fined. The league will not tolerate those types of bench clearing actions in their games. If the league decides that Coach Smith's actions were inaproppriate, they will fine him, just as they will players. Having said that, I too don't think coach Smith did anything that was fineable.
5:50 PM ETyou say as many as three teams from the afc north are you counting out teams like SD,mia, tex
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkNo. I think it's going to come down to the final week of the season for us to know who the playoff teams will be in the 5th and 6th seed and all those teams will be in the mix. I just think all the top three teams in the AFC North are all strong teams.
5:51 PM ETHey Brian, Have you considered coaching again?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkHaving coached for 30 years, it never really leaves your system. At the end of the day I'm still a coach. I would not dismiss the idea of going back to coaching, but it might be a very short list in terms of teams that would be interested in my talents and teams I would consider going to.
5:53 PM ETCOACH....WHO WOULD BE YOUR MVP AT MID SEASON..??
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThat's always a difficult question to answer, because many times the person who is playing the best at his position, may not be the person that has had the biggest impact on his team or the league. People like Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Brett Favre are all deserving of consideration, but I don't think the Colts would be anywhere close to 8-0 if it weren't for Peyton Manning.
5:56 PM ETIs there anyway the Packers can salvage there season with such a disappoiting Offensive line as they have now. Do you see them playing any better as the year goes on?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkI've been one of the strongest advocates for the Psckers and Aaron Rodgers, but their loss to the Bucs has me questioning that. There is no question that they have to solve the answer to their protection problems if they have any chance of playing themselves out of their current situation.
Robbie, Murphy, NC
5:57 PM ETCoach, what do you think of the panthers play lately? Can they still win a Wild-Card spot?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThe Panthers are certainly in a difficult position, but you had to be impressed against the Saints. They played a tough, physical defense, they have a punishing running game. But their inconsistencies at quarterback and the inability to make plays down the field in the passing game are going to make it very difficult for them to find their way into the playoffs.
6:00 PM ETWhat are your opinions on Steelers HB, Rashard Mendenhall coach?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkI think he's beginning to give the Steelers the run threat that they've needed. If the Steelers are going to repeat as champs, they're going to need that running game in November and December and their play Monday night in Denver was very impressive.
Adrian , El Paso
6:02 PM ETWhat do you think about the cowboys performance on sunday against the eagles? Do you see them as super bowl contenders?
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThe Cowboys have long had the talent to win the NFC East and be a factor in the playoffs. If they continue to play like they did against the Eagles, they will certainly be a factor. The challenge for the cowboys is to play this way in december and january and actually win a playoff game.
Brian Billick, NFL NetworkThanks for all the good questions this week. We'll do it again next Tuesday. Same time, same place.
