Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Hi everyone. Hope you're all caught up with the first weekend of free agency. Let's talk about it. -
Joe, CA
12:00 PM ET
I would love to see Ocho and T.O. together in Cincy! What is the probability that T.O. will join the bengals on a scale of 1-10?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Joe, let's give that a 6. I don't think they'll get involved in the Brandon Marshall hunt, but Carson Palmer has already come out in favor of TO, and it wouldn't be an expensive deal -- not a lot of leverage for Mr. Owens. -
Andrew, Cleveland,Ohio
12:01 PM ET
Do you think the browns are going to make a trade for a starting quaterback
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Andrew, I think they'd love to. I think they can end up trading for Seneca Wallace as a backup. They will struggle to get someone like Donovan McNabb who can control where he goes due to his contract. You might be going with a draft pick, or an improved Brady Quinn.
Derek Anderson should be out of there by March 15, at which time he is due $2 million if he's still on the roster. -
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
And on the subject of McNabb... People keep saying that the Eagles can't have three QBs on the roster when the season begins. But they can.
It's the last year of McNabb's contract, so it's just one more year of dealing with three QBs on the roster. If Kevin Kolb makes even more improvement in camp, they can shop one of these QBs in late August. But there's no reason they can't keep all three for one more year. -
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
The Eagles just gave Michael Vick a $1.5 million roster bonus. He's scheduled to make $3.75 million this season. McNabb is $5.5. Kolb is getting $600,000. So they have a little less than $10 million tied up this year in thre QBs. But that's still cheap compared to the likes of the Colts ($15.8 million for Peyton Manning alone).
So I will not be surprised to see three QBs on the roster. -
Samir, Wayne NJ
12:08 PM ET
Rolando McClain or Sean Weatherspoon?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Diffeent style - I guess I'd take McClain for a 3-4 defense, Weatherspoon for a 4-3. -
Corey, Aussie
12:10 PM ET
Hey Pat. love the mock draft. Love even more you have the rams taking bradford at number 1. Do you think the rams are deadly serious about this guy?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Corey, they are on hold til they see the workout. But if the workout goes well -- and Sam told me he expects it to go very well -- then they cannot pass o a franchise QB. They may not be in position again to take one for years. -
Jim , Maine
12:11 PM ET
Is Dez Bryant the real deal, I've read some "experts" believe he is better than Michael Crabtree....do you agree?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Hi Jim. I don't necessarily agree with that. To me, an NFL player is measured from head-to-toe. And from the top of his head to his neck, I know Crabtree is better. Below that, it might be real close. -
Jason, PLEASE ANSWER
12:12 PM ET
Pat, will David Carr possibly take Alex Smith's job at any time during the next season. Will this move turn into a move like the Cardinals signed Kurt Warner several years ago as a backup and he became the starter?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Jason, Kurt Warner was a Super Bowl winner when he signed with the Cardinals. David Carr has never been able to stay in the field. No, I don't see the parallels.
And I don't think he will beat out Alex Smith. In fact, the deal has me scratching my head in the first place. What it really means is that Shaun Hill is gone in San Francisco. -
Ted, CT
12:15 PM ET
Patty, read ur article on RFA's and shouldn't the Raiders use the #8 pick to get J Gaither? With Al's 1st rds lately a proven player would fit the bill.
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Ted, I do not disagree with you. This is a unique young man with lots of experience -- and maybe as young as a pick you can get this year. Needless to say, it's a better risk than the ones they have taken in recent first rounds. -
Sean , New York
12:17 PM ET
Do you think the Giants should trade up in the draft to get Rolando Mclain? What do you think it would take to get him?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Well, Sean, you are moving from 15 up to where I project McClain will go -- right around 10. To move five spots, you'd have to give up at least your second-round pick. I would not do that.
If he falls to you, great, If not, you'd be assued of Sean Weatherspoon or Sergio Kindle. My new mock draft will be out tomorrow. -
Aaron , Tampa
12:19 PM ET
Pat, It seems that so many analysts rate Suh and McCoy as almost equal and some rate McCoy higher than Suh. How do you rate the top two DT prospects? Thanks.
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Aaron, they are very close. But at this time I'd take Suh over McCoy, based on college production as the tiebreaker. And maybe scheme will have something to do with how teams see these players. I did not like McCoy's bench press numbers, though that is not a major factor. But Suh has impressed in every aspect -- including a tremendous sitdown I had with him at the combine. -
JIm , Maine
12:22 PM ET
Understanding that opportunity will be the determining factor, which 3 backs coming out of college this year do you think can take the load of a featured back in the NFL
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Jim, I know part of your question pertains to the size of CJ Spiller. But his college history suggests he can do it. Ryan Mathews of Fresno State certainly looks like a full-time back. As does Anthony Dixon from Mississippi State. -
Ian , Oklahoma
12:23 PM ET
Hey Pat! Big fan. Hope you can break down this possible scenario for me. Let's say that Seattle signs Brandon Marshall and gives Denver the 6th overall pick. What do you think the Broncos would most likely do with that pick? Thanks!
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
With that pick, Ian, I think they would go for the best inside defensive lineman left on the board. Assuming Suh and McCoy are gone, I wuld turn my attention to Dan Williams, or I might package some picks and move up. You've got the Cutler pick from Chicago -- and you can package that and this one to get to No. 2 for Suh or McCoy.
But another way to go would be to stand pat and take Dan Williams and Dez Bryant, to replace the WR you just lost. -
Andre, Kitchener, ON, Canada
12:27 PM ET
Pat, I know its early and we'll see the results on the field but can you assign a grade to some of the most notable transactions that have gone down so far? Any moves that you aren't high on?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Andre, I'd be concerned about the money Julius Peppers received -- awfully tough to live up to the expectations that come with $90-plus million.
I like the Dansby signing in Miami, and I'm happy to see Gary Brackett return to the Colts.
I think the Dunta Robinson signing in Atlanta gives the Falcons more flexibility to do something more ni the draft. ... I'd be a little concerned about the signing of Kyle Vanden Bosch in Detroit. That said, given the recruiting position a team like the Lions is in, I'm impressed with how they've been able to sign players quickly. I know how hard that can be. -
Randall, fo town
12:31 PM ET
What are the chances of the dolphins picking up sharper?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Randall, I think their interest lies in Ryan Clark first, for age reasons. Sharper is the fallback for all the teams looking for a safety. Not because of production -- he was great last year. But just the age issue. He needs to return to New Orleans. -
Sonny, Arizona
12:34 PM ET
Which QB should the cardinals bring in to compete with Matt for the starting job?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Sonny, maybe Derek Anderson when he is released by Cleveland. They might check the health of Jake Delhomme. Beyond that, probably no one out there that can compete with him. -
billy, san fran
12:35 PM ET
so the cardinals lost warner, boldin, rolle, and dansby. would a solid draft by my niners make us the favorites in nfc west?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
I think it will, Billy. There's an adjustment period coming up in Arizona. They made a good move to get Kerry Rhodes, but there are still holes to fill.
The 49ers beat Arizona twice last year. And this could be the year for you to win that division.
Don't forget, the Cards still haven't re-signed their kicker, Neil Rackers, and their left tackle, Mike Gandy is on the street. They have a lot of work to do. -
Tore, Vestermark
12:37 PM ET
Who of the remaining free agents do you think the Titans should address?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
The Titans need an outside linebacker. Assuming they are passing on Keith Bulluck -- which I would not do -- I am not ovrly impressed with the rest of that free-agnt group. So that's a draft issue. Next: DE. I would talk to Jarvis Green and Raheem Brock. Then at CB, it's Leigh Bodden or forget about it. ... At safety, I'd be trying to sign Ryan Clark. Lastly, bring Derrick Mason back. He caught 73 passes last year for seven TDs. He could help Vince Young. -
Tim, Carolina
12:40 PM ET
Carolina needs help and they dont have a first round pick do you think it might be a possibility that they trade jonathan stewart to san diego for there first rounder
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Tim, I don't think San Diego would be interested in trading their first round pick. There are good RBs available late in the first round.
But I'm talking to Chargers GM A.J. Smith on my radio show later today. I'll be sure to ask him. -
ryan, canada
12:41 PM ET
hey pat who do you think is more likely if either of the two to end up in kc, thomas jones or fargas?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Ryan, Justin Fargas would have to pass a physical. Thomas Jones is 100 percent healthy. Jones is No. 1 on my pro free agent board right now. There may be competition for his services. -
cannon, texas
12:43 PM ET
do you think LT and AP would be the best backfield duo in the league? what are the chances of the vikings going after him after losing chester taylor?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Cannon, they should go after LT. First, as a third-down back to fill Chester's role. Two, as insurance against injury to Peterson. Three as a highly-respected pro who will add something to that football team. -
Samir , Wayne NJ
12:45 PM ET
Does the Giants signing Rolle give them a top 5 safety tandem in Rolle and Phillips?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
If Kenny Phillips is healthy, it would. We're still wondering if he's healthy, though. I do think they felt they needed a second safety like rolle even if they were confident in Phillips' return. -
Daniel Hensley, Madsion Virginia
12:47 PM ET
Who are the Redskins looking at? There have been a lot of releases, no signings
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
I think Bruce Allen is looking closely at players and not jumping out and throwing money at them. He's positioning himself for some modest moves -- and he may still re-sign some of the 10 players he has cut. Look for him to be active this week and next, as the prices simmer down. -
Ballgame , Green Bay
12:49 PM ET
Did the Pack overpay for Clifton due to lack of options and horrible planning on the o-line?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Ballgame, that remains to be seen. But it appears they paid him a little more than the market said he was gonna get. But who cares? He is your left tackle, and this resolves a need so that you can fill others. Now you can go into the draft and maybe find a guy who can play right tackle for a year before moving over. In my last mock, I had the Packers taking Mike Iupati. He can play right tackle or either guard spot. I still like that ove. -
steven, tampa florida
12:53 PM ET
hi pat who do you think the dolphins will draft in the first round?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Steven, I had Miami taking Earl Thomas in my first mock draft -- but that would change if you sign Ryan Clark. If you sign Clark to eliminate the safety need, then you need to get a nose tackle -- Jason Feguson is older, and he's suspended the fuirst eight weeks of the season. -
Kuna Bear, Idaho
12:55 PM ET
Can the bears get a High second for Olsen. and which O tackle could we get with the pick?
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Kuna, I think you can ge a second, just not sure how high it's going to be -- there will be some tight ends in the draft there that will affect his value. But keep an eye on OT Ed Wang from Virginia Tech.
-
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com
Okay, thanks for the great questions. I'll have my second version of the mock draft on NFL.com tomorrow. Have a great week.
