NFL Network Insider: Jason La Canfora
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWhat's up everyonbe? Been a wild start to free agency already and still plenty of action out there. Thanks for checking in and let's get it started!
1:05 PM ETIs Antonio Bryant a 1,000 yard receiver with either the bengals or Redskins?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkIf he was a sure thing, a deal would have already been done. He is not visiting the Redskins as of now, and has only met with the Bengals, who are also weighing TO.When healthy and focused, he has done some special stuff. It's always a gamble in free agency, however.
1:06 PM ETHi, Jason do you think it is possible for the New Orleans Saints to opgrade their linebacker group via free agency - what are the chances of landing Joey Porter for example?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWell, the Saints are limited in free agency due to finishing in the final four. They lost Fujita, which will create a spot, but right now they are focused on DL help (Little and Hall coming for visits). May be an area they address in the draft.
1:07 PM ETI read somewhere that Antonio Bryant visited the Raiders on the second day of free agency.....any truth to that?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkNo
Cameron P., Chicago
1:08 PM ETI heard the the bears are interested in Lito Shepphard is this true? Also which FS do you think the bears are most likely to sign?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThey need in the secondary for sure. He or Buchanon might make sense to kick the tires around on.
Big Dave, Temecula,Ca
1:08 PM ETWhat is with the Seahawks so far? Please tell me that the Wallace move isn't to make room for a draft QB pick??? Jake Locker in '11!!
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkSeattle being very active talking trade and looking for free agents, but careful about signing guys. Lot of looking but not much buying just yet. Not a bad approach. With all of their picks they could still make a run at a restricted free agent and make smart bargain signings in free agency. They like the Eagles QBs, and could end up drafting a passer, too. Also looking at veteran free agents to provide depth. Plenty of options still out there.
1:10 PM ETI'm hearing that the Browns are lloking to deal Quinn away, have you heard anything like that?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThere are plenty of rumblings about that out there, no doubt. And it may well happen, but a source with the Browns said it's not very likely now and with Anderson gone, Quinn expected to be among the guys competing for that job. In reality, you wouldn't get much of anything for him now, and, similar to the Vick situation, so might as well hold on to him. If someone offered value for Quinn, sure, they'd do it, but that's not a likely scenario at this point.
1:12 PM ETIn which direction do you think the Jets will fill the void at FS?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkJets, too, are limited in signing impact free agents by the final four rule. The draft will be their best bet at this point.
1:13 PM ETIs there a chance that maybe the rumors of trading greg olsen be true, picture this, trade olsen to the pats for their first, then give the broncos that pick for brandon marshall, how does that sound to you?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkI don't think there is any way the Bears getr a 1st round pick for him. And there are plenty of people in the league who think that as the draft nears, depending on demand, even a high 3rd rounder would get it done.
Matt Terry, Ca
1:15 PM ETJason! Whats up buddy?! Lets say they make a Jason La Confora Action Figure! Do you have the Karate chop, or the Judo kick!? Also, does the La Confora action figure have a catchphrase???
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkHow about, Super Action Fast Texting Thumbs? Sadly, that's how I role. Catch phrase? Hmmm. How about: "Sources say?" Yeah, pretty lame. I admit.
Mike McCormick, Washington DC
1:16 PM ETJared Gaither, he was tendered a 1st rd pick from the Ravens. Any chance he gets picked from one of the Teams in the TOP 10 of the draft this year?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkDon't see that. Could be a team in the bottom end of the first round that considers it. The Ravens are very shrewd at evaluating their own talent and they have Oher there who could slide over, and giving Giather that huge contract, given some of his issues at times, would come with some trepidation. It is certainly a possibility, but I can't see it happening that high int he draft. A team like Dallas might make sense for (though I am told Cowboys not planning on any RFA action at this point).
Boyd, Medicine Hat
1:18 PM ETWhat are the Dolphins going to do about a #1 reciever? I dont see a wr in free agency that would help. B. Marshall would be great but its unlikely! Does that mean we are drafting one again?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkAntonio Bryant is a distinct possibility, but if you are talking a true No. 1, Marhsall is the only guy out there who fits that description. I agree with you there. Could draft one at some point, for sure. This Marshall market is only just forming and the offseason is very long. Plenty of time for things to play out there.
1:19 PM ETHow much do you think Jones is going to miss Richardson blasting holes in the defense for him, in KC?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkI hear ya. Even beyond that, it's going from the best OL in the NFL to one that is rebuilding and young. That's a huge difference. He wasn't looking to leave NY, but that roster bonus loomed large. He got solid money in KC, though, so it worked out pretty well in the end.
Mike McCormick, Washington DC
1:21 PM ETDerrick Mason, obviously the guys can still play and still wants to play. Does he end up in Charm City again or does he head up to NE or maybe to a Chicago or even Miami?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWould be surprised if he's not back in B-more.
Tony, Rochester, NY
1:21 PM ETCould Troy Smith be a good fit for the Bills offense?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkYep. Troy Smith and Tyler Thigpen would be guys ot keep an eye on.
1:22 PM ETWith Denver picking up 3 defensive lineman, whats their next move?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkParting with Marshall still a possibility. Picking a few guys to get extended to long term deals would make sense as well.
1:23 PM ETis larry johnson more likely to sign with the redskin or raiders?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWell, with the way this offseason has gone, Raiders have been more likely to spend than the Redskins (kudos to Washington to not setting the market and overpaying this offseason). If Oakland does so again here, I would tend to give them the advantage.
Darren Preece, Palm Bay, Florida
1:24 PM ETIs Eric Mangini actually getting any say in free agency and draft choices in Cleveland or is he there just to coach what he is given .......
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThis is a Holgren/Heckert operation. No doubt about it. Mangini will coach the best 53 men on the roster.
Shawn H, NY
1:25 PM ETId like to see the Rams become a contending team again, any news on some free agents visiting there?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkTheyre going to be pretty quiet from here on in it seems. Trading OJ is a possibility, but Feeley and Robbins fill some holes and the big decision obviously comes with the first overall pick. I see them taking Bradford, but we've got a ways to go.
1:26 PM ETWho do you think the Titans sign at DE, or do they draft someone?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThe draft has been their lifeblood in keeping that DL so good for so long.
1:27 PM EToy hello there jason i watch you on the television all the time your great for the nfl network. do you think the bears can just buy all the rest of the free agency and at what point do they think about 2011 free agency which is 100x better and probably cheaper
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkGuten tag! Thanks for watching. I agree, overspending in 2010 is very dangerous and I am not in love with what the Bears have done. Seems like desperation mnoves to me, and I tend to think it still wont be enough of an elixir to keep all the jobs there. To me they remain the third best team in that division. The teams that waited til 2011 will very likely prosper.
1:29 PM ETDo you think KC is ignoring free agency solely in the name of the draft?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkI wouldnt say they're ignoring it. It's not a great free agent class and they are a rebuilding team and the money on a lot of these won't end up making sense in the end. They re-signed Chambers, got Thomas Jones. The reality is there are no young impact players available, and that's what they need.
Ryan, Stanford, CA
1:30 PM ETHey Jason!! Is Car the only free agent acquisition we should expect from San Fran??
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThey won't be doing much. Perhaps an RFA ends up making some sense for them, but for the 49ers, getting Aubrayo signed to a long-term deal is the priority.
Cody, Las Vegas, Nevada
1:31 PM ETIs there any chance the Chargers will try to get Derrick Mason? I know they are not big on free agency but that is a big offer to pass up.
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkTheyre going to have a lot of money tied up in young WRs with Floyd and Jackson both needing long-term deals. Would be surprised if they signed a WR.
Paul, South Dakota
1:32 PM ETIn regard to the Bears, Lovie stated that Safety was a priority, but I have yet to hear of any moves. It seems low risk to offer Atogwe a contract and make the Rams match. Is his shoulder injury limiting interest? Go Bears!
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkHe could get action for sure. It would come down to the money and making an offer the Rams would not match. Ultimately a trade might make more sense.
Greg Kraemer, Guelph, Ontario Canada
1:33 PM ETJLC.. how much will Darren Sharpers knee problems hinder his ability to get signed anytime soon?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThis one looked like the Saints all along to me, and given the surgery, all the more reason to think that. His age and injury history were major issues already, and this won't help in that regard. It's not expected to be a long-term situation, but New Orleans makes the most sense.
Evan , Florida
1:35 PM ETdo you know if the tampa bay bucs can trade for brandon marshall
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWould be a shocker. Pick too high to make an offer sheet there, and they just are not spending that kind of money as they go into rebuild mode.
Justin, Cincinnatti, OH
1:35 PM ETAny chances the Packers will make a move and possibly trade for an immediate impact offensive lineman or cornerback prior to the draft, or are we to expect the same from the Ted that we Cheese Heads have all come to know and love in building from the draft?!?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWhat's wrong with building from the draft? For a team in a market like that, it has to be your primary means of acquiring talent. Re-signing Clifton was huge and Tauscher could still come back to compete on the opposite side and, for sure, I expect them to look for linemen in this draft.
1:37 PM ETIs the carolina panthers going to find help at qb or are we going into the season do or die
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThere isn't much out there in terms of impact players. I don't rule out dealing for Vick at some point, but you're not going to find a sure thing on the free agent market. Moore will have a veteran to push him, but they're going to have to draft a QB sometime soon.
Rich, Omaha, NE
1:39 PM ETDo you think LT would be OK sharing the backfield with AP in Minnesota? I hope so because I think that would be a nice dual threat for the Vikes, plus a good replacement for Chester..
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkIt has to be very clear to hinm at this point what the market is for him. It's going to be this typoe of role no matter where he goes. If he's all about being a part of a winner, this is a great spot to be (assuming Favre is back). He could extend his career as a third-down back if he excels. It makes a lot of sense to me.
1:41 PM ETHey Jason, aka young Adam Schefter, I was wondering if you think any teams with QB needs would attempt getting Jason Campbell from the Redskins for a first round pick? A team like San Fransisco seems like a place he could go and make a pro bowl next year, what do you think?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWhat's up? I think Adam is probably like only 5 years older than me, so he might get a kick out of that ... Anywho, don't see anyone giving up a first for Campbell. He could end up on the open market in a year from now. IF the Skins draft a QB and someone starts offering a second or a third, I could see there being a possibility, but the most likely scenario right now is Jason starting for the Skins in 2010.
Atanio, Lithonia, Ga
1:43 PM ETHi Jason, who do you think the Falcons will draft this year and has there been any consideration in trading Jamaal Anderson for another pick? He hasn't been able to produce anything close to the numbers you would expect being a #8 selection a few years ago.
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThat's what would make him hard to trade, unless you wanna just take a mid round pick for him. That's a big area of need for the Falcons and often your best help comes from within (thinK roddy White busting out a few years ago). I agree it doesnt look great for him right now and he needs to work on transforming his body some, and this will likely be a make-or-break type year for him.
Randy, Nampa, ID
1:45 PM ETNow that the Steelers have Randel El where does that put Wallace on the Depth chart? I think he has proven his worth this past year at being the number 3 receiver don't you?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkYep. This is not the ARE who departed in 2005. His explosiveness has really slowed and he never made an impact at all in the return game for the Skins. Not a bad guy to have in your rotation but I like what I saw from Wallace and we know all about what Hines and Santonio can do on Sunday.
1:46 PM EThey jason, do you think the oakland raiders will be making any move in the offseason besides the darft..what do you think about the whole jaMarcus problem
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThey're still looking at depth free agents, but as to the JaMarcus problem, man, they're stuck with that one. No simple solutions there. The kid is going to have to grow up some and figure a few things out.
Mike Espinoza, Juarez,Mexico
1:47 PM ETHy Jason,do you think any team whit WR need's would try to get Autin from the Cowboys and if they do What the Cowboys will do Williams in not on his top game
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkNah. Unless you create some sort of crazy poison pill, playing on the Roy Williams contract, it's not happening. You don't scare Jerry Jones off, especially in an uncapped year when his hands are somewhat tied as a final 8 team. He will re-invest on his own players.
Carlos, New Jersey
1:48 PM ETWhat are the chances the 49ers will get Joey Porter or Lito Shepphard
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkIf the price is right both would make some sense. Have a feeling Arizona will step up for Porter tomorrow and make it interesting enough for him to go there.
Dan, Miami, FL
1:49 PM ETT.O. and Moss on the same team. What do you think??
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkCan't see that going down. Would make for some post-game locker room scenes, though.
Jason, Purdue, IN
1:50 PM ETWill the Colts lose Bethea or Bullett? Will the Colts make a move for a Gaither, or a Tony Brown from Tennessee? Or are we likely to see more Allemans and Skolnitsky's signed?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkDon't see them losing either. A move for Brown would make sense for them and some other teams. That's one RFA I am keeping a close eye on.
1:51 PM ETHey Jason, are the Bills going to make any moves in the free agent pool because I'm waiting for something good to finally happen.
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkVery hard for them to compete in free agency. The Green signing is more their speed. It's going to be a slow process for them and in that division the deck is always going to be stacked against them. Unless they start drafting much better the hole is going to be deeper. That's where they need to make their money.
1:52 PM ETwat do u think the redskins will do with the number 4 pick
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkIf Bradford goes first overall, as I suspect, would not be surprised at all to see them take the QB from Notre Dame there.
James, Portage, IN
1:53 PM ETAre the Lions looking at anyone else in free agency or are they pretty much finished until the draft?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkThey will continue to look for help on D, in the secondary in particular. The Lions and 49ers are both interested in PacMan Jones and both of their coaches are expected to be at his workout March 19.
Dan, Nashville, TN
1:54 PM ETWhat's your thoughts on the Titans signing Weatherspoon? Does this solve their problem at linebacker?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkI like it. Exactly the kind of move they can make given their market status. He gave the Eagles a real boost when he was acquired, but they are getting some young LBs back healthy now. It's some insurance with the situation with Keith, and Witherspoon is a versatile guy who can move around. Playing behind that DL, I like it.
1:56 PM ETYou already mentioned the possibility of Porter going to Arizona. But what about Foote? I heard he was suppose to visit the Cardinals assuming Washington (I think it was) didn't sign him prior to his visit with Arizona. And does Derek Anderson really make sense for the Cardinals?
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkFoote is getting interest from AZ, Pitt and Wash, but is looking to get more money than what Scott Fujita got from Cleveland (over $8 mill guaranteed). That's giving some teams pause as for Anderson, man, he has the big arm and all, which is what they like in AZ, but he was really awful the past few seasons. Maybe a chance of locale helps his confidence or something, but it's hard to project much out of him at this point.
Jason La Canfora, NFL NetworkWell guys, my time is up. Thanks for all of the questions and sorry I could not get to them all. As always, you can find me on Twitter (JasonLaCanfora), as well as my blog on NFL.com. Thanks for your time and have a great week. Cheers.
