Hey everyone, appreciate everyone joining me today for the live chat on NFL.com! I'm ready to go.
  • Danny, London

    4:16 PM ET

Do you genuinely believe the 9ers will make the playoffs this year?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Danny. Definitely. I like our chances. We had a great OTAs, great minicamp, and I really like our team. I don't see why not!
  • Mike Wolk, Mississauga Candada

    4:17 PM ET

Hey Dashon, I'm a huge 49er fan up here in Canada. I was just wondering, from the OTA's, what's your feeling about the team this year?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Mike. The offense was exciting. I saw tremendous strides and improvement in the offense. Especially the linemen, they did a great job of finishing their blocks, picking up the blitzes. Alex Smith looked great getting the ball out to all the receivers and making the right decisions. There's a lot to be excited about.
  • Jason, Canada

    4:19 PM ET

Hi Mr. Goldson. Which newcomer to the 49ers are you most excited about this season? Thanks
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Jason. I would say LB Navarro Bowman. I'm on defense, so those are the guys I see the most and pay attention to the most. I'd also say WR Kyle Williams, and Taylor Mays. Those are the guys I see making an impact.
  • John Pham, san jose, ca

    4:21 PM ET

what was your first impression of Taylor Mays? what do you think about him now that you've met him?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hi John. When I saw him, I saw another big-bodied guy who can run with speed. In practice I've seen what he has, and he has range, size, and explosiveness. All great attributes of a safety. He's pretty smart too, which you need at the safety position.
  • S.C., San Francisco

    4:22 PM ET

Do you think Michael Lewis is a lock to start with you once the season begins, or do you think Taylor Mays can surpass him and take his spot? Can Mays learn the defense fast enough to start come week one?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey S.C. I wouldn't say anything ... the type of coach Singletary is, we all have to work to keep our spots. I will say Mays has a lot to learn to step into the starting role, as every rookie does.
  • Steven, Orlando

    4:23 PM ET

How do you feel Alex Smith is progressing...is he playing like a confident qb.
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

'Sup Steven. Definitely. Since the first day of OTAs, He's been on the top of his game. He's taking it serious, and he knows we'll go as far as he'll take us. He's improved big time. I think he'll be the most improved player in the NFL this year. We believe in him.
  • kevin holmes, san francisco

    4:26 PM ET

what is it like playing alongside patrick willis, the best lb in the league?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Kevin. I feel like it's an honor. He's on the raod to being one of the best LBs to ever play the game. To play with a guy who has so mucdh pride in what they do, I love playing with guys like that. On game day, you feel his fire, and you have to play at his level, a level that maybe you didn't think you could play at.
  • Marcus, Ohio

    4:28 PM ET

Hi Dashon, how has coach singletary helped you improve your over all performance?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

He just believes in me. He took a chance on me. When he got the job, he called me and told me I have the starting job. That said a lot, because I hadn't started. But he saw it on the practice field. He took the time out, and really believes in me and took that chance. My job is to show him and prove to everyone I can play and why he gave me that chance.
  • Trevor, Knaphus

    4:29 PM ET

Whats it like being coached by an NFL legend?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

He is a legend, don't get me wrong, but I don't approach it that way on the field. I see a guy who loves his players, who loves to coach. He wants to be the best players, and men, that we can be. He approaces us like men both on and off the field, and because of that we have the utmost respect for him.
  • Kevin, Ontario, Windsor

    4:30 PM ET

Hey Dashon, you have turned into one of my favorite players over this past year. I was wondering how would you describe Coach Singletary in one word?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Kevin. There's a lot of options ... let's say: Disciplined. Everything he does, the way he coaches, everything is about discipline. Not in a bad way. In a constructive way. He wants us to be the toughest, most disciplined team.
  • Javier Aguilar, los angeles

    4:32 PM ET

Great job on surprising your mom with a great present!
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Thanks Javier! I just felt she deserved it ... it was about that time. I feel like she deserves the world.
  • Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

For everyone on the chat who isn't in the loop on Javier's question, I got my mom a Mercedes SUV!
  • Dylan, Connecticut

    4:33 PM ET

Dashon, Whos got the best dreadlocks; You, Larry Fitzgerald or Lil Wayne?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

LOL Dylan! That's the craziest and best question I've ever been asked. I'm sure mine is better than 'Lil Waynes. But I'm not sure what Larry's look like right now. I'll have to go with mine. Wow!

Considering Polamalu has the Heads and Shoulders endorsement, I'm looking for a grease endorsement!
  • darren, Phoenix,AZ

    4:35 PM ET

Whats good D.Goldson? Man I've been a niner fan since 1993 and I havent heard this much buzz for my team in a long time but last year you guys missed the playoffs by a few games in the last few minutes. Does the team use that as motivation?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Darren, we definitely do. But it shows how hard we have to work. We have to learn how to finish games, or how to seperate ourselves from that situation by starting fast and finishing faster.
  • Adeeb, THE BAY AREA

    4:36 PM ET

What's up Dashon, show some love for the Bay and pick my question! Crabtree killed it out the gate after a holdout, do you see him taking the next step this season and truly blossoming into that #1 type receiver?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

'Sup Adeeb. Without a question. Crab has had a tremendous offseason. He made every session and has been making a lot of plays. I'm excited just as much as you guys are to see a full season under his belt.
  • jack siepmann, sacramento, ca

    4:38 PM ET

when rod woodson came to niners camp did he say anything to you and if so what did he say
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Jack. Yeah, I had a chat with him. He asked if I needed help with anything, and gave me his number too. I want to get with him sometime and pick his brain and watch film with him. It would be great to get that chance and show him what I see and see if he can help my game at all.
  • Yusef, Tennessee

    4:40 PM ET

Hey, Dashon. You had a great season last year and I am expecting more of the same this year. Thanks for taking the time to field a question from a life-long 49ers fan. Mike Iupati has all the makings of a Pro-Bowl caliber mauler at guard. How's he look so far, and from what you've heard what are the coaching staff's impressions regarding his potential? Thanks.
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Yusef. I almost forgot about Mike! He is a big-body guy and can really move. I'm almost shocked about how well he moves. With any lineman stepping up to this level, he has to work on recognizing blitzes and what the defenses are doing. Mike is going to be a good player for us and help out tremendously.
  • Arya Namvar, Washington DC

    4:42 PM ET

Hey Dashon, your my favorite player on the 49ers, my question to you is, as a kid what safety in the NFL did you try and pattern your game after? Thanks and good luck this season!
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Arya, when i was watching the NFL, I wasn't playing attention to the safeties ... Deion Sanders was my guy! Growing up, and then in college, all of my coaches would say I reminded them of Kenny Easly or Ronnie Lott. But those are huge shoes to fill. I'm not saying I'm like them, it's an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence. Right now, I do like Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu, who opened up the door for all us safeties.
  • Kevin Baldwin, Corona, California

    4:45 PM ET

What's up, Dashon? Who are some of the toughest offensive players you have had to play against in the NFL?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Tough question Kevin. That's tough to say. The toughest ever is Brandon Jacobs I think. Terrell Owens too. DeSean Jackson presents problems. Physically, Jacobs gets the nod.
  • Amit Bukai, Israel

    4:47 PM ET

Other than yourself, which defensive player do you think has taken the biggest step forward?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

I would say Franklin. He had a gerat season, and doesn't really get a ton of attention being in the middle of the line. But he makes the jobs of the linebackers much easier. And then Spencer at the corner too.
  • Sean, Toronto, ON

    4:48 PM ET

Yo D! I know most teams give the MLB the headset; but feel a Safety is in a better position due to the fact that everything is in-front of you. Could you explain a bit about what you look for, and what adjustments you're responsible for pre-snap. Does it ever feel like you're playing Madden? 9's4life
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hey Sean. Before teh snap, I'm looking at the personnel and then looking at the formation and the recognition. Are there receivers lined up out of normal position? We see the scouting reports, so we know if they're moving guys around, out of position. Then it's just keeping up with the shifts and motions, seeing what formation they want to run the play out of. I'm paying attention to receiver splits too. From there, it's time to play ball!
  • Tyler, Palo Alto

    4:51 PM ET

What have you discovered in the Bay Area that you hadn't known much about before?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Actually, yeah. It's not all about dreds and goatees! It's a nice city. A very nice city. A lot of big corporations that I didn't know about ... Google and the rest. I don't eat out that often, and I still have yet to go to Alcatraz and those types of things.
  • Jim, San Diego

    4:52 PM ET

The 9er D has made huge improvements over the past two seasons…what will it take for your unit to be the best in the league?
    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

Hi Jim. Consistency. Everyone has to be on the same page on every snap. That's what we're focusing on this year, which is about the fourth year everyone has been together. There shouldn't be any excuses as to why we can't be a top-3 defense.
  • Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

    Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

OK everyone, I'm out of time. Really appreciate all of you checking in to the chat. I'll see a lot of you when training camp gets started.

Let's go out and bring that trophy back to The Bay Area! Oh, and a shout out to my trainer Travelle Gaines! You know I have to do that. Don't forget to hit me on Twitter @thehawk38.
