Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey everyone! I'm training hard this offseason, and ready and excited to be a part of the Ravens. Thanks for joining in on the chat, so let's get to it ...
2:02 PM ETHey Ken! What's your thoughts on this Ravens Defense and what sort of immediate contributions do you think you will be able to make in there scheme?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensLooking at our defense, it's def a special, special group of guys. You have top-notch players at almost every position. We'll see where it all plays out during camp and once the perseason starts. I'm looking forward to learning everything possible. Once I get that down, and get into the playbook, I can play more free and not have to think - I can just make plays. Then I can see where I fit and where the coaches want me to fit.
2:04 PM ETWith the ravens putting together possibly the best team in years were your teammates (quality of talent) part of the decision that lead you here to baltimore.
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensI think that was one of the biggest reasons -- they've always been talented, always been tough defensively. But now with the young guys on offense, the guys they brought in, it def seems like a special group. It's a more balanced team now, with the QB, Anquan, the running game ... they have offensive options. And then with the defense in place, this could be a special season with a special group of guys.
Matt , NJ
2:05 PM ETWelcome to the ravens Ken! With the oppurtunity to play with ray lewis and ed reed affect your decision to join the ravens at all?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Matt. It had something to do with it. With Ray and Ed, respectively, they're the best at what they do at their positions. To practice and play with them, I'm really going to benefit playing with those guys.
2:07 PM ETdo you feel that baltimore is a serious contender this coming season...
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensMost definitely! I think they've shown year in and year out what they can do. It takes a couple years to get a symstem down, and develop younger players. But once you gel together ... it all hits. I really think this is a special group.
Alex, Phoenix, AZ
2:09 PM ETKenny, how do you feel about playing backup in Baltimore? Are you okay with it? Thanks bro!
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensOne thing about me, is that if we're winning and playing well, I'll have a role on this team, whatever it is. My role will be defined at some point, and then we'll go from there. It's all about winning. I'm a competitor, and I want to be on teh field. But if what's best for this team is for me to be a backup and contribute on special teams, then that's what I'll do.
2:11 PM ETHow are Coach Harbaugh and Coach Wade Phillips different and do they share any similarities?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensI've only been around coach Harbaugh a little, but I would say coach Phillips is a little more laid back, because I was around him longer. We'll see if that stays the same! Coach Harbaugh is a little more vocal. Both are very passionate, but it comes across differently. Coach Harbaugh gets his point across, you definitely know what he's saying.
Thomas, Mokena IL
2:13 PM ETWho was your favorite player growing up
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHi Thomas. I would say Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice. I got the opportunity to play with Jerry in his last full season in Seattle, and it was great. He's a great guy. I tell people all the time, he's so passionate, if he could get on the field now and play he would. I didn't grow up in the Bay Area, but both those guys stuck out to me, hearing about their work ethic and then seeing them on the field.
2:15 PM ETWere you surprised that the Cowboys cut you and are you gonna miss the organization?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Tyler ... I consider myself a business man, and I saw things goin gin that direction. I talk with Alan Ball all the time, and I told him there would be a time when he would take over.
So when it happened, I wasn't surprised. It was more disappointement. I wanted to be a part of that organization and the direction they were headed. It was a special place to be. I'll miss it. I still have a house down there, and I'll miss you fans. You offered great support to me.
2:18 PM ETI am a Cowboys fan, and I was sad to see you leave. I was wondering: Do you think Alan Ball has what it takes to cover receivers well, create turnovers, and run-stop?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Thomas. I would say yes to all of those. Alan showed, even in the four games I missed, he can play the position. Some look at his size, but others play the position who are bigger and don't put their size into it. He's always flying around the field and putting everything he has into it. The biggest thing is getting guys down to the field. It's not all about big hits. He can also cover, and play the back-end too. He's stepped up, worked hard, and is getting his body right for the season. I think he'll do a great job.
2:20 PM ETWho was the toughest player to tackle?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensI think we have one on our team right now -- Anquan, after he catches the ball, is really tough. He runs hard and has great balance and vision -- he's special at what he does, taking hits and still getting YAC. Adrian Peterson runs really hard. There are so many, so many great athletes. Those are two off the top of my head. Ray Rice does a great job of staying low and running hard, too.
2:22 PM ETAre you excited to become a part of the Steelers-Ravens rivalry? Thanks.
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Sean. LOL! I look at that rivalry as being similar to the Cowboys-Eagles and Cowboys-Redskins games. Those games were a battle. It's going to be special and I'm going to embrace them -- they're special games. But it's one game at a time.
2:24 PM ETKen, what is your favorite hobby outside of football?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Nathan. I love to fish, actually. Other than that, I'm a homebody, playing cards and watching movies.
Rasheed, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
2:25 PM ETHey Ken, how do you feel about playing with one of the best Safety's in the game today Ed Reed?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore Ravens'Sup Rasheed. He's special. Practicing with him will be special. Seeing first-hand how he does what he does will make me better. Any way I can benefit from that, and the team can, it will be good for me and the team. I'll embrace it. He's meant a lot to game.
I think we're talented at safety with myself, Landry and Reed. How it all works out will play itself out, and it's up to the coaches. But both those guys are special players. I'll find my role, whatever that is. To crack that lineup will be tough and I have my work cut out for me. We'll see how it all plays out.
2:28 PM ETExcited to eat crab cakes?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensOh Lord. You must be hungry huh Andrew? I hear they're the best though ... I'll put it on the list.
2:30 PM ETWas it hard to play against DeSean Jackson because of his speed?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Matt. He's a game-breaker. He's a guy we had to watch a lot of film on because of the things he can do. He's special, and he's still developing. He's doing all the right things on the field, and it shows in his game. To be his size and do what he does, it's special.
Danny, Glen Burnie
2:31 PM ETHow do u feel about not wearing number 26 this year?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensI don't have Landry's phone number ... but I'm going to find out how committed he is to No. 26! I know he's had it for awhile ... I guess this will be the first he'll hear about it .. or I can hollar at him on Twitter.
Jimmy , Costa Mesa, CA
2:32 PM ETWho's the best defensive player youve ever played with?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Jimmy. Wow, that's a great question. I have one in DaMarcus Ware. I had John Randle out there in Seattle. But if I had to pick one, it's Ware. He's so consistent. I'll go with him for now. Hopefully, though, some guys can compete with him for that title the next couple years in Baltimore.
2:34 PM ETwhat was your favorite team growing up, and why?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey David. You know what? I didn't have one! I guess that's why I liked Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice so much. I guess I like players. Guys who were underdogs and became great players. That was my thing, just watching guys and how they developed and how they played, and just trying to learn something from it.
2:36 PM ETWhere Lebron James Will sign ?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensIf I had to say ... especially with Bosh and D-Wade in Miami ... I'd say it's 50-50 between Chicago and Cleveland. But I'll say Cleveland.
2:37 PM ETSup Ken, I was just wondering who was your favorite player to go up against?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensSup Larry. I love top competition, so when Anquan and Larry were both in Arizona, they were a challenge. Any team that challenges you because they have the best skill position guys, they make you step your game up because the pressure is on.
Jimmy, Costa Mesa, CA
2:39 PM ETIs Mike Jenkins, the real deal? Btw gonna miss u, coming from a cowboy fan!
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensThank you Jimmy! ... Yes, Mike is the real deal. His size is impressive and he plays the position very physical. They have the real deal in Mike.
Trevor, Michigan, Grand Rapids
2:40 PM ETwhat is your top 3 favorite safties to watch in the nfl?
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensHey Trevor. I would have to say Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu are special b/c of how they play. You never know what Troy is going to do, from dropping in coverage to blitzing. Ed is more sideline to sideline and makes a ton of plays, regardless of whether he gets his hands on the ball. Those are my top two to watch, they make it exciting. Some don't consider safety a big-time position, but those guys make it one.
Doug Fullingim, Randleman, NC
2:42 PM ETKen, I was born and raised in Texas and love the Cowboys. I love you too man and I hate to see you leave. I wish the best to you- you keep playing with heart and good things will happen for you. God Bless You!
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensThanks much Doug! One thing I can say about the fans in Dallas -- and I'm seeing this in Baltimore -- you guys are supportive. And that support is appreciated. It made being a Cowboy special.
I'm a Raven now, and I'll just try to make this year a special year. I appreciate everyone.
Ken Hamlin, Baltimore RavensOK everyone, so my time is up. I enjoyed the chat and all the questions from you guys, thanks for hanging out. Hit me up anytime on Twitter @kenhamlin26.
