Do think that you could coach the same way you used to play as a Bear?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
No, I don't think I could coach the same way I played, because the game has changed. The kids have changed and the rules have changed. So I have to adjust accordingly, but my character, focus and intensity will be the same. But I just have to adjust a bit technically. -

Will you do letterman show? The niners fans would love it!!!
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
No, I won't be doing any shows until I've done something as a coach. -

Coach Sing - how do you see that the quarterback competition panning out this season? Are you looking for certain qualities or intangibles?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
Leadership is extremely important. Credibility at that position in terms of his teammates knowing, this is the guy. I won't really have to choose the guy, the huddle will choose the guy by the way they respond to the quarterback. The way the receivers respond to the quarterback and the way the defense asks questions of the quarterback. The team will really decide the quarterback. I'll just make the confirmation. -

How much has the first offseason as a head coach changed your viewpoint to coaching?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
I will say that nothing has really surprised me. The only viewpoint, maybe, as it refers to coaching, is just the amount of preparation for the media side of it. -

How is Alex Smith's shoulder coming along, and can he make the throws it takes to be an nfl quarterback.
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
Alex Smith's shoulder is doing fine, he gets stronger and stronger every day, he can make every throw right now. It's just a matter of building up the arm strength, so he doesn't tire it out, but the shoulder is fine. -

Mike, what do you think about using the Wildcat formation this year? Maybe with Crabtree behind center too?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
The wildcat is something that I've always been intrigued by and I'm sure at some point and time this year, we'll see what it looks like and we'll see if we have a player that can execute it, other than Michael. -

Hey coach, we love the niners in Canada and you as a coach? Is the team set at o line without having drafted a high pick in that position?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
We'll have to be. There can be no if, and or but about it. I figured going into the draft, we certainly wanted to get an offensive tackle, but if we did not get one it was a confirmation we had one on the team. We have a couple of offensive tackles on the team and it's on them. I've talked with them and told them I'm confident in them and it's up to them. I have all the confidence in the world we'll be just fine at that position. -

Coach Singletary, I was wondering what the plan is this year for our FS spot? I know Manusky moved Reggie Smith their to compete with Goldson, Williams, and Roman. From what I've read it seems like the competition has come down to Smith vs Goldson. If the season started tomorrow who would be penciled in as our starter at FS?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
Right now the free and strong safety positions are interchangeable in our system. First of all, Goldson and Michael Lewis are slated to be the starters. Reggie Smith, Jimmy Williams and Mark Roman right now, give us a lot of depth. -

What will be expected of Vernon Davis, in this upcoming year?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
All I want Vernon to do is be the best he can be. If he does that, he'll be just fine. I don't have any expectation for Vernon to do this or that, I just want him to have consistent growth from last year. -

coach, who out of all the young guys has caught your eye in camp. someone who you think-wow we might have a stud in that position?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
I would say that during our minicamp for the young guys, they were so tired, that I don't think anyone stood out. Above and beyond anything else, the minicamp was really for them to see how much work is going to be involved to get to the next level. -

Do you feel Balmer is ready to step up and be more involved this season?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
Kentwan Balmer will have a great year this year. He's working his tail off and pushing himself, him and Justin Smith are spending a lot of time together and that's a great sign. He's doing extra work, that he doesn't have to do, but wants to do, and that's a great sign. -

With the great work you've done as new coach,do you consider your team to be a great NFC SuperBowl contender?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
I thank you for your comment. But we haven't done anything great yet, but it's coming. As far as the Super Bowl is concerned, we'll find out early on where we are. -

Who do you see having a breakout season this year?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
As a team, we're poised to do great things and I'm thankful that we have a lot of great individual talent. The thought of all that talent coming together is very exciting. The individuals will speak loud and clear as the season goes on. -
Robert, Maryland
6:33 PM ET
Mike, you were a great linebacker with Chichago, what made you come back and coach as the Linebackers Coach and then become a Head coach?
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
I'm very excited that I've had the chance to come back to coaching. I know now what I didn't know when I retired, which is how much I missed it. Coaching is something my wife and I really had to pray about, and felt the calling to do it. I'm very excited to be back. -
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers
Thanks for your questions and comments. Keep cheering for us! We'll make you proud.
